CAMBRIDGESHIRE. Lock-ups at Broughton, Burwell, Coveney and Eaton Socon.

I have located twelve exisiting lock-ups in Cambridgeshire and half of them would have been in the historic county of Huntingdonshire which was amalgamated with Cambridgeshire in 1974. Lock-ups in this area are generally known as 'The Cage'. The lock-up at Orwell was demolished in 1979.

The lock-up at Broughton is situated in the old animal pound in Causeway Road, PE28 3AR
and dates to about 1840.

The sturdy lock-up at Burwell is situated in Casburn Lane and dates to about 1830. It was later used to store the village fire engine when double doors were fitted. It would appear that it originally had two cells and the doorways have been bricked up, leaving two venitalions grilles above.
It has been restored by the Parish Council and is now a builder's storeroom.
